School for the Blind and Visually Impaired

_______________________________________________________________________

The School for the Blind and Visually Impaired that I designed for my ARCH 202 final was inspired by the idea of liminal space. Within the liminal spaces in the school there are specialized details for the students to experience.

For example, in the plaza level there are texture pods for students to sit in and experience different textures. There is also an herb garden for students to experience more texture and different scents.

On the street level, there are sound pods with an installation inspired by the Organ of Corti. The Organ of Corti was designed to emphasize a particular noise. Adjacent to the installation is a waterfall that runs the length of the courtyard. While in these sound pods, the sound of the waterfall would be emphasized - providing for a serene sound experience.

Within the building, the small apertures in the roof (inspired by Peter Zumthor's Therme Vals) strategically allows light into the building and creates a pathway for the students to get to and from their classes.

Lastly, different types of flooring with different textures are placed throughout the building and the site to help the students orient themselves in their environment.
